BERLIN REFUSES Nuncio's Request to Visit Poland

Mgr, Cesare Orsenigo, the Papal Nuncio in Berlin, has informed the Vatican that the German Government has refused to grant him permission to visit German occupied Poland to examine religious conditions there, the British United Press understands from an excellent source in the Vatican City.
It is recalled that Herr von Ribbentrap, the Nazi Foreign Minister, during his recent visit to the Pope is stated to have claimed that reports reaching the Vatican concerning the condition of Catholics in Poland were greatly exaggerated. He is stated to have added that Germany was willing to allow a Vatican representative to visit Poland in order to obtain personal impressions.
The Vatican source said that the Pope was willing to agree, and suggested to Herr von Ribbentrop that Mgr. Orsenigo be granted permission to go.
Specific Cases
The Vatican source went on to say that in a report to the Pope Mgr. Orsenigo has now informed the Pontiff that the Nazis have failed to grant him permission to carry out the mission, adding that reports reaching the nunciature in Berlin show that religious conditions in Poland, including that of numerous convents and Catholic schools, are becoming worse.
The source added that Mgr. Orsenigo's report states that the pastor of Jaktorow, Fr. Tanke, was found shot in an open field, while Fr. Itoiski, pastor of Szezepanow, and Zablocki, dean of Gniezno, were likewise found shot. The report also claimed, it was stated, that more than 600 priests at Chet= have been arrested for no apparent reason.
The source believes that the Pope is deeply grieved by the information received from Mgr. Orsenigo, and will shortly place the entire case into the hands of the Holy Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, which includes 15 Cardinals.
It is believed that the Congregation will be instructed to decide what form of protest is to be forwarded by the Holy See to the Reich.—B.U.P.
