Youth: Vauxhall Training Course Is

Given Official Standing
As the Feast of Christ the King (last Sunday in October) approaches, preparations are being made in several parts of the country for a re-dedication of Catholic Youth to the Divine King. News reaches us of a Youth Festival being organised for that time by Clubs of the South Wales parishes of Treforest, Aberdare, Mountain Ash, Ynishir and Hirwaun, with seven others in the area, all of which have the warm encouragement of the Archbishop of Cardiff.
Five Clubs combined last Thursday for a Youth Rally and sports at IVIoun.tain Ash, when a contest for a " Silver Bowl," presented by G. Bradwick, Esq., to be competed for annually, was watched, by large crowds. Aberdare won by a narrow margin over Mountain Ash, with Treforest in third place. The " Bowl " was presented to the Aberdare captain (Miss K. Reddy) by Fr. W. Boulton. The event may be extended next year to all National Catholic Youth Clubs in the area.
Training London Leaders
Meanwhile, in the London area, the Vauxhall Leaders' Training Courses, which proved an outstanding success in Jul.y. are to be resumed as a monthly venture as from Sunday, September 13, the scheme now enjoying a certain official standing. It is an inter-diocesan course for the three metropolitan dioceses of Westminster, Southwark and Brentwood, priests interested from these dioceses, as well as lay Youth workers, for whom the course is primarily intended, being invited to attend. Sessions begin at 3 p.m., the address being 44, Harleyford Road, S.F.
Plans regarding the future of these courses arc still being discussed, but the fact that lay people's interest remains keen ha e been shown in the unexpected response to Fr. Valentine's famous appeal for them to sanctify their work through Retreats.
Eighty boys and girls from all over Greater London attended the one-day Retreat held under Geail auspices at Sloane Street last Sunday, described as " very successful indeed." 'Fr. Valentine, 0.P., who conducted it, said—and this was the general thought in all his conferences: " Enthusiasm alone it not enough. Young people are enthusiastic by very nature. Prayer and sacrifice must become the foundatioo of enthusiasm. For Youth wants to give. Give cheerfully. God loves the cheerful giver,"
Southwark S.V.P.'s Plans
At the same time enthusiasm and energy are being shown for Youth work among members of one of the pioneer societies dedicated to Youth, that of St. Vincent de Paul, whose Southwark Diocesan Youth Confederation has now a new chairman for the South-Western London District Council in Mr. H. E. Hansen. The Council, remaining inactive during the war, is now being revived, and a meeting is being held next Thursday at St. Vincent's, Altenburg Gardens, to elect officers. The Council will devote itself to Youth work.
CRIPPS REVIEWED NOTTINGHAM YOUTH
All Nottingham's youth organisations were on parade last Sunday, when after a march-pt that took 50 minutes to pass the saluting base, they were reviewed and addressed by Sir Stafford Cripps.
The Pope's flag and the Union Jack were carried in the procession by the Nottingham Catholic Youth Movement and the various Catholic Scouts and Guides, as well as the Catholic company of the G.T.C. were in their places in thy ranks of the uniformed cohorts which marched by, rank upon rank.
All told there were some 8,000 boys and girls in the parade, including Navy, Air Force, Army and Civil Defeece Cadets, Boys Brigade, Girls' and Boys' Clubs and Church Youth Groups.
CROYDON HAD YOUTH RALLY
Croydon Youth.Week was concluded on Sunday by a combined rally held at Duppas Hill. The Anglican Bishop of Dover gave the addrees, which was followed by a religious service. Catholic members of all groups taking part assembled at The Mount, Duppas Hill, headquarters of the Southwark Travelling Miseirm. A short address was given by Fr. Edward Mitchinson, recently appointed to the work of youth organisation in the diocese of Southwark. ,Canon John Byrne, M.A., Headmaster of the John Fisher School, gave Bence diction.

Not only was every parish in the city represented in the contests, but the public rallied in such overflowing measure in support of the event that late-comers were perched precariously on the edge of the bath.
After presenting the prizes, the Bishop congratulated Father Rooney, of the Holy Family, and Father Knox, of the Holy Rosary, for organising such a very fine performance, and also thanked the officials of the old Leeds Catholic Swimming Club for their efficient and generous assistance.
Dr. Downey to Speak on Platform With Nonconformist
SOUTHPORT.
Considerable interest is manifest in Southport in the forthcoming visit of Archbishop Downey to the Cambridge Hall to speak on " Religion and Life." under the auspices of the Chapel Street Congregational Church, of which the Rev. W. Paxton, well known in London and Liverpool, is the minister. Mr. Paxton told our Southport representative that Dr. Downey and he had been personal friends for many years, and doubtless this had influenced the Archbishop in beginning at Southport " what will probably be the first of a series of similar meetings."
The meeting is on Friday evening, September 11, and the Mayor of Southport (Councillor H. W. Barber) himself an Anglican, NOR preside.
