From Mrs M J Danby SIR – Mary Kenny is wrong to assert (Comment, Feb 18) that the “Duchess of Cornwall” is a made-up title. It is nothing of the sort.
It is common knowledge that the Prince of Wales has a number of other titles, the first being that of Duke of Cornwall, by which indeed he was known before the Queen made him Prince of Wales upon reaching the age of 21.
In the light of the tragic consequences of history, it would have been unfitting for the Prince’s second spouse to be known by the title Princess of Wales (although perfectly correct) and therefore Duchess of Cornwall was the obvious, and tactful, choice.
Yours faithfully, MARGARET DANBY London SW18
