MOR. Gustave Prevost, Cana dian-born Prefect Apostolic of Lintung. who is reported by the Chinese Reds to have "confessed" to spy charges, warned in advance he might be made to make such a "confession" and that it would be as false as that extorted from Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary.
-1 his was, made clear with the release by Church authorities in Hong Kong of a letter Mgr. Prevost wrote to his mother some time before his arrest in Shanghai on September 7.
Mgr. Prevost was never permitted by the Reds to take over his prefecture of Lintung. Ile served as head of the Seminary Department of the Catholic Central Bureau in Shanghai until the organisation was suppressed by the Reds.
`Our turn next'
"Persecution is spreading rapidly against the Church," he wrote to his
mother. " It has now come to Shanghai. The Catholic Central Bureau has been under attack by the Communist. papers here. We place our complete trust in God.
" Many priests and Sisters are imprisoned in other cities. It may he our turn next. You know how St. Peter was rescued by an angel . . . I don't know if any angel will pull me out alive . . . Your prayers, the prayers of my mother. can do it. if et is God's will. I may either be expelled and come out to you, or . who knows?
" You remember the Cardinal of Hungary and what he was supposed to have said after he was arrested. You remember. too. how you used to scold me when I was little for talking too much. Especially when I said foolish things, remember?
" I am still your same little boy. If you hear that T have said too much, remember the story of the Cardinal. You'll know the whole story from the Cardinal. And don't scold me."
