BISHOP VON GALEN
Continued from page one to the Four Freedoms, should maintain a school system whereby Catholic children might be educated by
atheists.
Bishop Galen was deeply conceined atxmt the fate of his diocesans during the winter Hundreds of thousands are without homes and hundreds of thousands live in damaged dwellings without propel shelte• against rain and cold He could not understand that the British should proclaim that no coal whatever would go to Get man homes, that all not needed for public use
would be exported. Did we wish to drive more Germans to suicide ? He could not understand that no timber whatever should be released for repairing the dwellings of his unhappy diocesans.
Bishop Galen could not understand why the local commandant did not visit him. Nor why the military authorities waited until all Russians had been removed from the area before issuing a sternly-worded decree which imposed the death penalty on all foreign.workeis who murdered German civilians GREATLY PUZZLED Bishop Galen was greatly puzzled by the almost prohibitive restrictions imposed on diocesan papers, parish' magazines and the publishing of encyclicals and foreign pastoral fetters. He could not understand why German Bishops were afforded no facilities for intercourse with Rome' and with Bishops abroad. His opinion of the Alliedcontrolled press was highly unfavourable.
Bishop Galen tepeated his greetings to the readers of Toe CATHOLIC HERALD and expressed the hope that the Christian character of the British people would find its expression in an enlightened and generous policy towards the Catholic Church and its institutions in Occupied Germany.
As I left his simple room. I could not escape the feeling that the Military Government had been singularly unimaginative and timid in its dealings with this great Bishop and national leader. I learned a fortnight later that the Military Government had found it necessary to confiscate Bishop Galen's car. Perhaps they will return it to the Cardinal ?
