Bishops celebrate Kew parish centenary

A SERVICE of thanksgiving to mark 100 years since the opening of the Church of Our Lady of Loreto and St Winefride in Kew, Surrey, was held on Sunday, July 23.
Archbishop Kevin McDonald presided over the Solemn High Mass, while Bishop Howard Tripp, Bishop Tom Burns of the Forces, Fr Tom Scannell, the parish priest, and many visiting priests who have enjoyed associations with the parish over the years concelebrated.
Local dignitaries, including the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Celia Hodges, and representatives of other churches and community groups joined the large congregation in celebration. The parish was founded in 1898 by the Marist Fathers, who first established a mission in the area. The church was opened in 1906 and served by the Marist Fathers until 1984. The celebrations had particular resonance for Bishop Tom Burns as he was a Marist student in the parish and was ordained at the church in 1971.
