LONDON'S SUMMER SCHOOL OF CATHOLIC ACTION Practical Applications and Demonstrations Follow Lectures

The Summer School of Catholic Action for young women this year is being organised at the express wish of Cardinal Hinsley by the Ladies of the Grail, and is to take place from August 12 to August 19, at St. Charles' College, London, W.10.
The school will be opened by Mgr., Myers, Bishop Auxiliary to Westminster, who will give an address on " Catholic Action is Catholic Life," and it will be closed by Archbishop Godfrey, Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain.
But it is a Summer School with a difference. The object is not to teach, but to train. As the Grail points on t, people are now trained for everything—for A.R.P., for all careers, et e. so why not for Catholic Act ■n. The summer school gives young Catholic women a sound training in all branches of Catholic Action— Liturgy, Apologetics, Social Questions, Psychology, etc. The system that the school will follow will he discussions of a practical nature followed by concrete demonstrations. CATHOLIC ACTION—CATHOLIC LIFE Bishop Myers opens the school with a talk that sets the note for the whole week : " Catholic Action is Catholic Life." This is followed by a symposium by the Rev. T. Fitzgerald, " Catholic Action in the Various Environments," which is the jumping-off place for the rest of the talks. On August 13 Mgr. Myers, Mr Geoffrey Webb and a member of the Montessori Society will discuss three different aspects of the Liturgy. On August 14, Mr Frank Shoed will give a whole day's training in Apologetics from a practical point of view, with practical illustrations. The title of this day's symposium is " Knowledge." August 15 is the spiritual day, when the Rev. Vincent Rochford will talk on " The Spiritual Background." This is intended to put all Catholic Action work in its right perspective.
PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS August 16 is devoted to Social Questions, when the talks will consist of " The Effect of Unemployment on Youth," by Mr Oscar Spencer; "Some Practical Applications of Catholic Social Teaching," by Miss Nancy Hugh Smith; and a debate on " The Catholic in Economic Life," which will be led by Miss Eva Ross, Ph.D. The practical work of this day's training will consist of visits to housing estates, social centres, factories, hostels, etc.
As social work is closely allied to Psychology, August 17 will be devoted entirely to Psychology. The speakers will be Fr. Aldan Elrington, 0.P., Mother Mary Paul, a Grail Leader, and Fr. Leycester King, S.J., the well-known psychologist, who will discuss respectively " Some Social Applications of Psychology," " The Art of Thinking," " Character and Temperament," and " The Psychology of the Emotions."
August 18 is devoted to practical considerations of the various methods of approach to Catholic Action. This Summer School is meant for everyone who wants to know more about Catholic Action.
FREE LANCERS It is meant for those who already belong to C.S. societies and for those who do not. These " free-lancers " will have an opportunity on August 18 of finding out the work of the societies, and members of one society will be able to examine the methods of others.
There will therefore be a demonstration class by a representative of Our Lady's Catechists, a demonstration inquiry circle by a representative of the Catholic Action Girls' Organisation, a demonstration study circle by a representative of the Catholic Social Guild, a talk on the work of the Legion by a Legionaire, and a talk on the spirit of the Grail by a Lady of the Grail. '
Those who cannot come to the whole school will be able to take part in individual lectures except for the Spiritual Day.
The fees for the week are two guineas, Including full board and accommodation. This fee includes also entrance to the lecture and discussions, demonstrations, films, visits to housing and social centres, etc. Special rates will be quoted for those coming from a distance and for single lectures.
