RENEWED AGGRESSION IN POLAND?

`Gomulka will proceed gradually ..'
"ARE pretexts being sought in Warsaw for acting more strongly against the Church?" asks the Vatican City newspaper Osservatore Romano this week following a threatening speech by Mr. Gomulka concerning religious teaching in the schools of Poland.
Stating that " The school belongs to the State, not to the Church . . . the only authority in the school is the State," the Communist leader said that while the teaching of religion may go on under certain conditions, crucifixes and other religious emblems must be removed.
Speaking shortly after returning from a visit to Moscow. Mr. Gomulka claimed that priests and lay teachers have introduced school prayers outside the religious instruction hours.
Commenting on Mr. Gomulka's remarks our special Polish correspondent writes, " it is now evident that after nearly two years of an uneasy truce, the Communists appear bent on renewed aggression towards the Church."
