New French Bishop
The third Bishop of Tulle, France, in six years, Mgr. Amable Chassaigne was consecrated at Clermont-Ferrand last week. Mgr. Chassaigne served in the Great War as a sergeant and a lieutenant, being twice mentioned in despatches. In Auvergne he is test celebrated as the champion of the Boy Scout movement. He is also a great supporter of the J.O.C.
Cathedral Centenary
Exactly six hundred years ago on April 23 last the Cathedral of St Stephen at Vienna was consecrated. Cardinal Innitzer, Archbishop of Vienna, arranged for the celebration of the centenary to take the form of an eight-day mission for the people, which was preached in the Cathedral from April 13 to April 21. The centenary itself was celebrated in the Cathedral and all the churches of Vienna with Masses and special sermons,
Dog Eats Dog
Emelian Yaroslaysky, head of the Godless League, has violently attacked M. Lorulot, his erstwhile friend and colleague in the field of godless activities.
The representative of the French freethinkers on the World Union of Freethinkers and one of the principal organisers of the Congress of Freethinkers which took place in London two years ago has incurred Mr'sslaysky's displeasure for publishing an article in La Libre Pense on the fate of Finland in which Lorulot voices his Yaroslaysky is more indignant even against the freethinkers of Luxembourg, who wrote to the Chairman of the World Union of Freethinkers suggesting that the Soviet Godless League be asked whether it approves of Moscow's aggression In Finland, and if it does, to expel it from the World Union. Yaroslaysky, infuriated, declares that his league will continue working for the ultimate triumph of Communism whether it pleases Lorulot, the Luxembourg freethinkers, or anyone else, or not.
Championed Negroes
Founder of the first Catholic church for negroes, St. Peter Clever's, Jeff. on Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y., the Right Rev. Bernard Quinn has died recently in a New York hospital at the age of 52. At his death Mgr. Quinn's work among the negroes of New York had become so great that he needed three curates to assist him to carry it out. He was also the founder and rector of the Little Flower House of Providence for Homeless Colouaed Children. Here more than 300 children were cared for and provided with elementary education.
