Marists' founder is Beatified
THRQUGH great crowds of pilgrims gathered from almost all parts of the world the Holy Father was borne through St. Peter's on Sunday evening to venerate the newlybeatified founder of the Marist Brothers, Blessed Marcellin Champagnat.
It was a special day of rejoicing for the order's 13,000 Brothers and their pupils as well as for the three Cardinals, 54 Archbishops, 6,600 priests and 3.000 seminarists who are former pupils.
The Holy Father repeatedly blessed the cheering crowds, and at one point asked his hearers to halt while he blessed groups of students from schools of the Marist Brothers.
Fifteen Cardinals and an official French, Government delegation headed by the Foreign Minister, M. Pinay, were in the basilica.
1 here too, in the morning, for the High Mass celebrated by Cardinal Tedeschini, Archpriest of St. Peter's, were the two people whose miraculous cures were cited in the beatification cause: Giovanni Betafo, of Madagascar, cured of meningitis. and Mrs. Grondin, of the United States. healed of cancer.
Some 800 Marist Brothers from all over the world with several thousand boys attended the ceremony.
From Britain
From St. Mungo's Academy, Glasgow, went the Provincial and headmaster. Twelve other Brothers travelled from Britain with 40 boys from St. Joseph's College, Dumfries.
Celebrations will take place later in Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Dundee. Dumfries.
Blessed Marcellin was horn in 1789 in the village of Marthes. near Lyons. At the age of 15 and without any previous schooling he entered the seminary at Verrieres, where one of his companions was Jean Marie Vianney, the ('urE of Ars, now St. John Baptiste Viannev.
After his ordination, appalled at the ignorance of young boys. he founded an order of brothers under the patronage of Our Lady to care for and educate poor boys.
The following year he bought a small house with borrowed money and started work-with two young men who could neither read nor write.
His work grew and spread until to-day Marist Brothers staff 780 schools with 250,000 students.
Blessed Marcellin died in 1840. His cause for beatification was introduced in 1896.
