King Leopold, a model Catholic monarch, stands revealed as the

mainstay of the Belgian political resistance. He represents the spirit of his people in resisting the Nazis and thwarting thee' designs. Recent happenings prove him to be a big thorn in Hitler's side,
a towering asset in the cause of freedom and of the Allied Nations.
Bider, a few weeks ago, set a bait and Ribbentron angled to catch Leopold with it. The bait was a tempting one. Leopold coldly refused to bite. Hitler stands rebuffed.
An invitation was made to King Leopold to resume the reins of active authority as King—an attractive proposal implying his release as prisoner of war—provided he would appoint a new Government under the Premiership of the renegade Leon Degrelle, Rexist Leader, and undertake to wage a campaign against Bolshevism.
As further inducement, Germany offered a peace treaty securing the territorial integrity of Belgium together with the addition of that stretch of Dutch territory which lies On the left bank. of the River Scheldt at its estuary and adjoins the .Belgian Province of East Flanders, should Belgium care to annex it. A commercial treaty between Belgium and Germany would follow.
IN THE INTERESTS OF BELGIUM All this was offered " in the interests of Belgium " if only the King would agree to a policy of integral collaboration with the Nazis.
The royal refusal was blunt. It is another check to Hitler. The silence of the Laeken prisoner of war is eloquent.
It is timely that fulter recognition be made by the world's press, and particularly by the English press, to the valour, high-minded conduct and unimpeachable loyalty of Leopold II. Honourable amends are due to him. It mow belongs to the press to repair under the same slashing headlines as when it branded him a traitor the wrong then done him.
SLANDERED AND CALUMNIATED English Catholics ought to remember that King Leopold is the target for slander and calumny because he is an outstanding Catholic monarch. Even in his private life he is consistently calumniated and besmirched. His recent marriage " blow(' by Cardinal van Roey " has been painted as a subject of scandal and blackened by the press report that a prince was born only two months after the marriage. A press denial later seemed to pass unnoticed.
The character of his wife, too, has not been respected by certain press. Recently I was fortunate to meet one or Mdlle. Bael's relatives, a nobleman bearing one of Belgium's most ancient titles. At interesting length he assured me of the high Christian and virtuous character of King Leopold's second wife, a girl of Catholic birth and upbringing.
The report of the arrival of the little prince at such short notice was just a piece of infamous journalism (not unlike the story revealed by Quentin Reynolds, reported lust week by " Jotter," in regard to the Pope), he calmly asserted.
Certain Continental politicians known for their entipathy to the Catholic religion, their atheism, their antimonarchist principles, are not perturbed at this campaign of calumny against a Catholic king. A fact to be remembered by the Catholic reader in England.
