JOINT PILGRIMS

SOON after eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Pope Paul VI will fly from Rome to the Holy Land, to be greeted by lunchtime in Amman by King Hussein of Jordan. It is now certain.that on Sunday, on the Mount of Olives, the Pontiff will meet the Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras of Constantinople, who leaves f or Jerusalem tomorrow afternoon.
After touring Israel during the day, Pope Paul will return to the Jordanian sector of Jerusalem on Sunday night, and is expected to receive the Patriarch in the Apostolic Delegation. It is believed that he may return the visit, at nine o'clock on Monday morning, by going to see the Orthodox leader at the local Patriarchate.
Final arrangements were made when, on Saturday last, the Patriarch's envoy, and namesake, the Metropolitan Athenagoras of Thyatira, went to see Pope Paul at the Vatican. This was the first time in 500 years that an official Orthodox envoy has met a Roman Pontiff.
He carried an invitation from the Patriarch asking the Pope to call a pan-Christian conference of all church leaders throughout the world to plan a common fight against atheism and tyranny.
Approval for Sunday's meeting in Jerusalem has been secured from eight of the other Orthodox Patriarchs. including Patriarch Alexci of Moscow and Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus. Only the Polish, Czech and Bulgarian Orthodox leaders withheld assent.
As newsmen, pilgrims and tourists pour into Israel and Jordan by the thousand, hopes are being expressed that the visit may help to do for divided Jerusalem what the Christmas breach of "the wall" has done for Berlin.
