DIL AUSTRALIAN Catholic Church has been working to prevent lawmakers from allowing an abortion dnig to become readily available to women through their doctors.
The February vote will decide whether the abortion pill RU-486 will remain under the control of Minister of Health fony Abbott, a Catholic and stated anti-abortionist, or will be transferred to the Therapeutic Goods Administration, the regulatory body that manages prescription drugs.
Calling the estimated 90,000 abortions a year that occur in Australia "too many," Archbishop Denis Hart of Melbourne, said in a January 24 statement that he was "totally opposed" to allowing freer access to RU-486. "It is a powerful drug that produces a chemical abortion," said the archbishop, noting that women needed choices other than abortion. "With one in four pregnancies in Australia ending in abortion, the abysmal fact remains that the most dangerous place for an Australian to be is in the womb of his or her mother. Simply providing more choices for abortion is no solution at all."
Archbishop Hart said Australia needed legislation to help women with unwanted pregnancies. "The Catholic Church of Australia already provides some of these solutions. We want to work with government agencies to improve such non-abortion alternatives." the archbishop said.
