Cardinal unveils cathedral Centenary

ARDINAL BASIL. HUME
last week launched a special 1995 programme of art, music and worship to mark the 100th anniversary of Westminster Cathedral's foundation, Speaking at the launch, the Cardinal said that "Cathedrals have a message to give; it is very important that the message they give should be heeded. Society is dependent on spiritual values. The celebration will justify itself so far as it will communicate the message of the Gospel".
Alongside a series of Lenten Meditations by European cardinals, there will be a series of lectures Weight pre-eminent speakers including composer John Tavener and Catholic journalist Hugo Young.
On the musical front, there is a feast of concerts and recitals performed by leading soloists, choirs and orchestras, as well as the world-renowned Westminster Cathedral Choir. Highlights will include the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing Elgar's Dream of Gerontius, and the Bach choir conducted by Sir David Willcox.
