Spuc reassures priests of fidelity to bishops

ONE OF BRITAIN’S leading prolife groups has denied that it is attacking the bishops over the controversial Mental Capacity Bill.
In a newsletter issued last month, the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (Spuc) sought to correct the impression that it was in open disagreement with the Church’s tactics over how to address the worst aspects of the Bill.
Spuc has lobbied against the Bill whereas Archbishop Peter Smith, chairman of the Department of Christian Responsibility and Citizenship, and the AllParty Pro-Life Group have consistently sought dialogue with the Government.
The newsletter, from Spuc’s national director John Smeaton, argues that Spuc’s pro-life position is “entirely at one with the teaching of the Catholic Church and the Society earnestly wishes to be at one with the Church’s hierarchy on political strategy”.
