ONLY a return to the law of God could solve international problems, Pope Paul said in an address to the new West German Ambassador, Alexander Bucker, who called to deliver his credentials.
Such problems, the Pope said, were becoming "increasingly involved and seemingly almost without a way out."
In a call for peace. he gave an implicit blessing to West German Chancellor Willy Brandt's policy of opening to the East. He had been making a worthy contribution to the cause of world peace.
The Vatican had been striving to lead the nations "with all the moral strength at its disposal, towards peaceful co-existence. And the German people had been inspired by Christian teaching about the dignity of the individual.
Herr Bueker told the Pope that his government was trying to alleviate the painful consequences of the division of Germany and of all Europe. They found inspiration in the Pope's efforts for world peace, and were eager to collaborate with the Vatican for peace and in the struggle against poverty.
Pioneer of Church work in media dies
Apriest who pioneered Church work in 'the mass media died one hour after Pope Paul called at his bedside. The Pope blessed 87-yearold Fr. Giacomo Alberione at the headquarters of the St. Paul Pious Society. which the priest founded in 1914.
The Society concerned itself with religious work in the press, cinema, radio. television and records.
