MR. JULIUS NYERERE, who resigned as Premier of Tanganyika last year to give his full attention to the Tanganyika African National Union, has now been nominated by TANU as its candidate for the Presidential election in October.
This means it is certain that Mr. Nyerere, who is a Catholic, will become Tanganyika's first President under the new epublican Constitution which comes into force in December. Constitutional proposals already adopted provide for the President to exercise very considerable executive powers on the lines of Dr. Nkrumah's presidency in Ghana.
