51 ordained al Loyola ceremonies
THJIRTY Jesuit students and 21 secular deacons were raised to the priesthood on Monday by Cardinal Sin. Archbishop of Genoa, in the basilica at Loyola, birthplace of St. Ignatius.
His Eminence was presiding as Papal Legate over the final ceremonies commemorating the feast day and the 400th anniversary of the death of the founder of the Society of Jesus.
On the following day the 30 new Jesuit priests celebrated theil first Masses simultaneously in the basilica.
When these Masses ended. the Papal Legate celebrated Solemn Pontifical Mass in the presence of numerous members of the Hierarchy and a great gathering of pilgrims.
The Holy Father made a special broadcast to Loyola on Tuesday. Thousands of Spaniards were gathered there, headed by General Franco.
St. Ignatius, His Holiness said, was "a human being of the finest quality, enriched with sanctity," and a faithful soldier of the Papacy who had left as a heritage "a loyal militia which lives from his spirit."
During the past three months 549 pilgrimages have visited Loyola. Smaller groups have helped to bring the total number of pilgrims up to more than 100.000.
10 MORE IN ENGLA ND Ten Jesuits were raised to the priesthood on Tuesday at Heythrop College, Chipping Norton, by Archbishop Grimshaw of Birmingham. They are Fr. George Croft, Fr. Aloysius Church, Fr. Thomas Middlehurst, Fr. John Berrell, Fr. Joseph L. Hughes. Fr. Ralph Easlwell. Fr. William Forrester, Fr. Guy de Marneffe, Fr. Paul Buhagiar and Fr. Alfredo Quevedo, S. J.
On the same day Fr. William Yeomans. S.J., was ordained in Lyons and Fr. David Brigstock and Fr. Richard Foley, S.J., in Belgium.
Four Japanese
Four neW priests, the first Japanese to enter the Society of Jesus since the war, were ordained in Tokyo on Tuesday by Archbishop Doi a year ahead of their time—a privilege in honour of the 400th anniversary of the death of St. Ignatius.
The first Japanese to be ordained priest was Blessed Sebastian Kimura, of Hirado, whose grandfather was baptised by St. Francis Xavier. Blessed Sebastian was ordained in 1601. He was burned to death on the Nagasaki peninsula in 1622.
The feast and anniversary of St. Ignatius were celebrated in Frankfurt with the ordination of 13 Jesuits by Archbishop Muench, Papal Nuncio to Germany.
