Where Are The Workers Going?

—ASKS CANON CARDLIN
" Where are the workers going ? Are they going towards God, or towards Moscow?" Canon Cardijn asked on Wednesday last, in an address to the Y.C.W., at which were present Mgr Charlie, Bishop of Namur, and Mgr. Huart, Burgomaster of the city.
Elaborating on his question, Canon Cardijn said, " We are living to-day in the midst of a revolution, the ambit of which far surpasses that of 1789. Throughout the world, industrialisation pushed to the very extreme has . taken the place s, of frustrated 'agriculture.
" In those countries where. t h e workers es have benefited e by higher standards of living there are no longer any
cradles a n d
there are no families. In certain countries more than 80 per cent. of all births are illegitimate. This is the mark of the proletariate hich denies the inviolable rights and the personal destiny of man.
"First and foremost, the problem is a religious one. We must ask ourselves what is going to become of the young worker? What does he understand by life, love, relations between the workers, and the dignity of the worker?
" The Young Christian Workers are proclaimed everywhere, and it is their task to lead back to the Church the millions of young working men and women."
