meneral Eduardo Lonardi, • -ichampion of religious and national peace in Argentina, who became Provisional President after General Peron had been thrown out, died suddenly last week at the age of 59.
General Lonardi, father of three sons and two daughters had suffered personalty under Peron's dictatorship. But there was no hint of revenge when he was called to guide the nation after the fall of Peron.
Before he flew from the Catholic stronghold of Cordoba to Buenos Aires for his presidential installation he offered hia sword to Our Lady of the Rosary, invoking her as Our Lady of Resistance and Restoration.
He chose other practising Catholics for the majority of the posts in his Cabinet, and when he came on the balcony of the Casa Rosada after his installation, he declared;
alt shall be my constant preoccupation to maintain unalterable respect and guarantees of the rights of the Church and the religious conscience of all, whatever their creeds.
On the balcony he embraced Cardinal Copello whilst the throng below cried out: aLong live Christ the King and Catholic Argentina».
General Lonardi said ; allf am convinced that although we are a small country, we have performed a great deed, which shows that God's design gave us special aid.
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of Mgr Jeanmard, Bishop of Lafayette, Louisiana, who is 76. and has appointed the Auxiliary Bishop, Mgr Schexnayder, 1. succeed him.
Cardinal Copan.), who was seriously ill during the last weeks of the Peron regime in Argentina, has returned to Buenos Aires much improved in health after four months in Rome.
