Sutch eloquence

From Fr Richard Martin SIR — What a pity Nick Thomas (Media Matter, July 16) missed Dom Antony Sutch’s homily at Magdalen College School’s Commemoration Service in the University Church at the beginning of July in order to be able to attend the ordination at Blackfriars. It was quite the best I have heard at Commemoration, or indeed, in my long career as a schoolmaster/chaplain. You could have heard a pin drop as he left the pulpit in that crowded building.
And afterwards I was able to stroll up to Blackfriars, along with one of the choir who was also singing there, in comfortable time to be seated before the Ordination at 12.30pm. It was a great joy to see the Dominican brother who prepared our Catholic boys for confirmation ordained priest, along with three other brothers, and three more as deacons. The next Sunday I was in Rome for another ordination of an old boy. Deo Gratias!
Yours faithfully, RICHARD MARTIN Chaplain, Magdalen College School 1994-2002 Oxford
