FRANCO WILL FIGHT ON

" Victory Will Come To Us"
—General Franco There is still every indication that the Spanish War will be fought to a finish. In an interview given by General Franco to Randolph Churchill (special correspondent for the Daily Mail) the General was asked: " How does your excellency envisage the ending of the war'? Will it be an imposed victory or is there any chance of compromise ending the struggle?"
General Franco answered: "Victory will come to us with the close of hostilities. We cannot counter' ance any negotiations or compromise.'
Randolph Churchill writes himself : " General Franco made it plain to me as much by his manner as by his words that his confidence in final victory is unimpaired and that he still holds unswervingly to the declared objective of a united Spain, freed from all taint of Socialism and Communism."
Friendly Towards Britain
Further questions were put upon the subject of relationships between a Nationalist government and Great Britain.
" Friendly relations with your country are traditional in Spain," General Franco said. " We would have preferred that these relations should never have been interrupted, and Great Britain has proof of this. British interests in the Medeterranean arc perfectly compatible with those of a strong national Spain."
And then came a query concerning new Spain's angle on the League of Nations: " The League has not yet fulfilled the purpose for which it was created. We regard it with scepticism."
Regarding the reputed Red victory of Guadalajara, General Franco had much to say in indictment against the Red Press propaganda, which he described as making liberal use of falsehoods and lies.
Intelligent Success
Mr. Churchill suggested that in the Spanish Civil War as in the Great War machine-guns have given such overwhelming advantage to defence that the offensive can rarely hope to succeed without gigantic casualties, and that modern war must end indecisively or only with the exhaustion of one combatant, but General Franco disclaimed this theory.
" I disagree entirely," he said. "One can always manoeuvre, and success, after all, lies where intelligence, ability to command, and valour of troops and faith are to be found. We fought during the first months of this war when we were enormously inferior both in men and war material.
"Although the proportion against us was 10 to 1, we vanquished the enemy.
" Over and above this, you must remember that in Spain at present 50 per cent. of the men against us are at heart our supporters. They are compelled to fight against their will.
"The majority of the remainder also is forced to fight under duress of the Russian whip and with international machine-guns in their rear."
