Vienna marks a king's triumph
IF YOU are in Austria next week you will be in no doubt as to the fact that Pope John Paul too is about to arrive in that country. There are 2,400 large posters displayed
throughout Austria proclaiming the forthcoming visit of the Pope, which coincides with the Austrian Katholikentag (Day for Catholics) celebrations.
Apart from a short pilgrimage to the famous Marian shrine at Mariaiell, at the end of a Four-day visit, the Pope will remain In Vienna. But do not be tempted to go to Vienna to see him unless yuu have arranged accommodation for even in early August the organisers were already short of accommodation fur at least 6,000 visitors who had still planned to come.
The Pope's visit to Vienna is scheduled to coincide, almost to the day, with the battle 300 years ago when the Polish King John Sobieski helped to raise the siege of Vienna by the Turks and so finally ended the attempts of the Ottoman Empire to ravage Europe.
Pope John Paul visits the Kahlenberg on September 13 from where he will be able to look down on both the romantic Blue Danube and the City of Waltzes, only one day after the actual anniversary of the battle. 11 was on the neighbouring Leopoldsberg overlooking Vienna, that Mass was celebrated before the battle which finally brought relief to
the City.
Today, no other world personality attracts more attention than Pope John Paul. Every visit the Pope makes attracts the world's media in force, and Austria is determined that the coverage of Its Katholikentag celebrations in his presence will be well reported. Well over 1,000 journalists and people from the media have already registered.
The whole country has focused its attention on this historic event. There are many exhibitions. To name but two which will stay open from September 6 lentil October 15 one at Vienna's IN eo-Golhic Town Hall, the Ruffians, is devoted to "Christian Art since 1945", another at the Academy of Formative Arts has the title of "Art Inside and Outside the Church".
