1,000 singers for Cathedral opening

ATHOUSAND singers are being sought in the Liverpool archdiocese to take part in the opening celebrations of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on May 14. They will sing a Mass in English being specially composed for choir and congregation.
Musical training or choir experience are not required, says Fr. Donald Gordon, in charge of the operation as diocesan director of music. The thousand voices are required for the congregation's part, and rehearsals will begin early next year.
Another 250 singers are needed for a choral recital to be included in the secular celebrations following the liturgical opening.
• ABC Television cameras will be inside the cathedral to cover the consecration ceremonies. Liverpool-born David Southwood, ABC's Chief of Outside Broadcasts, who will direct the cameras, said: "I am thrilled that our application to cover this historic occasion has received formal approval."
