CATHOLIC ACTION A CITIZEN'S DUTY
" EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE
PART IN NATIONAL
DEFENCE."
So stated the Apostolic Delegate, speaking at the City Hall demonstration in Newcastle during the 62nd Annual Conference of the C.Y.M.S., held during the Whitsuntide weekend.
National Defence for Catholics, said Mgr. Godfrey, should, however, be secondary to being " enrolled as a soldier in the army of the King of Kings." The Catholic Lay Apostolate was a counter-attack to " the banners of the godless blatantly unfurled and raised on high."
His Grace was present at the High Mass on Sunday in St. Mary's Cathedral, celebrated by the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.
Mr Richard O'Sullivan, K.C., Recorder of Derby, outlined the nature of the attack on religion and stated that men were being asked " to take sides for God or against God." " You cannot imagine the T.U.C. beginning their deliberations with a Latin hymn," he said, in reference to the beautiful Benediction singing of the Catholic working men assembled.

Three Principles

First, they ought to live in harmony with the Church and accept her guidance in all things spiritual and
temporal. They 'should follow her advice in business, at work, in the field of politics and in all the many activities of modern life.
Secondly, they should serve the Church and be ever ready to join in Catholic activities and take their part in the lay apostolat e.
Thirdly, they should he prepared to defend the Church. They should fit themselves for this great labour by learning what they could of her teachings, and by defending her at work, in the street and in the public places against her enemies.
