Duckett's, booksellers
GEOFFREY CHAPMAN, the publishers, of London, Dublin and Melbourne, announce that to secure the long-term future of Duckett's, the Catholic and specialist booksellers, they have acquired the business. The 21st anniversary of the bookshop's opening by Cardinal Godfrey, they Apostolic Delegate—in a semi-derelict shop in the Strand with a blitzed frontage—was celebrated only a few weeks ago.
In spite of the current economic difficulties Chapman's intend to expand Duckett's during 1967. Their plans include the setting up of a major international reference library in liturgical and catechetical subjects. The monthly Duckett's. Register, which combines news and views on Catholic books and has a world-wide circulation, will also be extended still further as a, source of information to the book-buying world and to booksellers.
Duckett's is under the patronage of BI. James Duckett, the young martyr who was executed at Tyburn for selling Catholic books in defiance of Queen Elizabeth's infamous edict. On his way to Tyburn his wife Anne met him with a stoup of wine which be tasted and then asked her to drink to the health of his, betrayer, whom he freely forgave.
