SEVEN-YEAR-OLD CATHEDRAL CANTEEN CLOSES DOWN
After nearly seven years of continuous service to men of the navy, army and air force, the now famous St, Peter's Hut, next to the Westminster Cathedral, and lent by the Cathedral authorities for the purpose to the Catholic Women's League, closed down yesterday.
During these years the Hut has provided meals that must run well into the million mark. Even during the worst of the blitz, when night after night the club had to move down into the cathedral crypt, hot meals continued to be served. Service folk of every nationality have used the Hut, and letters have come from all over the world expressing appreciation of the excellent work it has always done.
On Friday evening last there was a farewell party to about a hundred of the voluntary workers who have given their time and energy, under the direction of the hon. superintendent, Mrs, M. Alexander, to the successful running of the club. Each of these helpers was presented by Lady Rendel, who was until recently the chairman of the C.W.L. Huts and Canteens Committee, with a badge and a certificate of thanks from the General Officer Commanding the London District.
To Mrs. Alexander, whose energy and devotion have been such significant factors in the efficient organisation of the Hut, the workers presented a silver rose bowl, inscribed " from a few helpers left at the canteen." Her assistants, Miss Whipham and Miss Hicks (who has never missed a day at the canteen) were presented with flowers.
