From Our Own Correspondent
Southwark Diocesan Catholic Parents' and Electors' Association are to call a meeting of representatives of all Catholic organisations and associations within the diocese to discuss the formation of a liaison committee to ensure that Catholic views may be made public with a maximum of unity and solidarity.
This was agreed at a meeting of the Diocesan Council held in Ramsgate last week-end.
A further resolution accepted by the Council aims to assist Catholic electors to fulfil their obligations to study the policies and views of candidates at parliamentary and local elections and to use their vote, by requesting the Diocesan Executive Committee to prepare a questionnaire on matters of fundamental Catholic principles which parish or central councils of C.P.E.A. could submit to candidates. Delegates also discussed ways and means of encouraging and assisting Catholics to take part in public life.
The executive report presented to the meeting revealed that considerable progress has been made in collaboration with the Diocesan Rescue Society in connection with Catholic children in residential homes under the local authorities.
The London County Council have agreed to notify the Rescue Society of the names of all Catholic children in the L.C.C. Homes at Ashford, Banstead, Shirley and Sidcup.
In each of these homes there are more than a dozen Catholic children and the C.P.E.A. Diocesan Committee will advise their appropriate parish associations to ensure that local interest is taken in the children.
The L.C.C. has further promised to consider a scheme for eventually segregating the Catholic children into one home, though at present accommodation is very short. Similar approaches are to be made to the County Councils of Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
The report of the Co-ordinating Council of Diocesan C.P.E.A2s was also considered, and the delegates welcomed the steps being taken to watch the activities of the Association of Education Committees in connection with Section 76 (the Rights of Parents Clause) in the 1944 Education Act.
