Muggeridge criticised for attacking arts

MALCOLM MUGGER IDGE attacked sex and violence in the arts when he spoke at the official opening service of the Edinburgh Festival in St. Giles' Cathedral on Sunday. He said that at no previous time had the arts received as much material help and encouragement and that it ought to be a golden age for the arts. "But is it? Scarcely."
Later, Mr. Graham Hughes, art director of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, which is one of the festival sponsors, said the speech was unfair to the. festival organisers.
"It is regrettable that Mr. Muggeridge should have chosen the start of the Edinburgh Festival, of all things, to make a wild denunciation of virtually all current forms of art."
