ST. JOHN LATERAN
new Pope, for the abundance of words.
" There are no surprises for him who keeps his sight fixed steadfastly on God, not even the surprise of death, of death which is holy because it is the beginning of eternal joy and glory." At the end of the Mass. the Holy Father, in accordance with custom, left a purse of money for distribution among the poor of the district. In olden times the Pope used to give the Cardinals a dinner after takine possession of his Cathedral; Pius V suppressed that and the purse was substituted.
Then, wearing the triple tiara. the Pope was again carried in procession through the church soon to appear on the balcony high above the great Lateran Square which long before noon had been packed with thousands of people. He then gave his blessing Urhi et Orb!. to the city and to the world.
