Ordination of women

THE Church of Ireland's (Anglican) General Synod has overwhelmingly approved in principle the ordination of women to the priesthood. It did not, however, set any time at which such ordinations could begin.
Recently, New Zealand became the third Anglican Church province in the world to provide for the actual ordina1 i on, of women to the priesthood. The United States Episcopalians are expected to vote on the issue at their triennial convention later this year.
The move by the Church of Ireland followed a strong plea by Archbishop Alan Buchanan of Dublin in an address to the General Synod.
