AMNESTY GROUP DEMANDS

news of Mgr.
BERAN
CONCERN about Archbishop Beran of Prague, who was spirited away by Czech Communists in 1951 • to a secret destination, has increased as a result of our exclusive story of July 14.
The American N.C.W.C. Press Agency, which is the Catholic equivalent of Reuters or British United Press, has flashed extracts of the story to newspapers and magazines in over 60 countries, thus prompting readers in all parts of the world to begin a chain of enquiries regarding the Archbishop.
Mr. Peter Benenson, London director of the Appeal for Amnesty organisation, has written to the Czechoslovak Ambassador in London informing him of numerous enquiries from different countries regarding the present whereabouts of Archbishop Beran, and asking for a statement as to "where Mgr. Beran is, whether he is under detention or free, and what is his present state of health."
The embassy has replied that they can't answer the queries, but they have sent the Amnesty group's letter to the State Office for Church Matters in Prague, along with all the other letters of enquiry which have been sent to the London embassy.
Replies to these enquiries, says the embassy, will probably be received direct from Prague "in about three weeks". This will be the first reference that Czech authorities have made to Archbishop Beran's fate since 1955 when Viliam Siroly, Czech Prime Minister, declared that Archbishop Beran was neither in prison nor under house arrest.
