Life plans to 'Mail MPs a Mountain'

by Coky Giedroyc THE anti-abortion group, Life are planning their largest campaign to date, "Mail MPs a Mountain" (MMM) to take place in October and coincide with the 20th anniversary of the 1967 Abortion Act.
A mass collection of signatures on pre-printed letters and post cards is underway and will be presented to MPs on October 27.
The campaign is intended to exploit the new political "season" with Government legislation concerning control of in-vitro fertilisation techniques promised and at least one pro-life Private Members Bill anticipated.
David Alton, the Catholic Liberal MP who won third place in the ballot for private members bills, is "very seriously considering putting forward an amending bill", his office confirmed to the Catholic Herald. Press speculation that he might yield his place on the list to Nicholas Winterton, Tory MP for Macclesfield, who has greater ambitions for restriction, was dismissed by Mr Winterton's office.
The organiser of the MMM campaign, Keith Davies, told the Catholic Herald that the timing of the campaign is crucial." We are aiming to put pressure on individual MPs rather than Parliament as a body. It is vitally important to maintain pressure and the momentum of our cause . . . even the smallest change in the existing law on abortion at the parliamentary session would be a significant step for us".
