BUILDING AT WONERSH & MARK CROSS
FURTHER news of extensions to the Southwark diocesan seminaries was given last Sunday in a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Cowderoy: St. John's, Wonersh, will be increasing its numbers from 87 to about 150. and at St. Joseph's the junior seminary at Mark Cross, numbers will rise from 83 to 115 or 12b.
Pre-fobs
Although six new classrooms (temporary ex-pre-fab houses from London) were added to St. Joseph's in 1960. more additions arc needed by the time the new year starts in September.
At Wonersh a permanent extension to one wing, paid for through a legacy from Dr. Flanagan, a former parish priest of Lewes, is finished but has resulted in overcrowding in the chapel and refectory.
Again a generous benefactor has come to the rescue: Mgr. Ernest Moodie has offered to pay for the chapel extension (now in progress) and also for additions to a wing containing the kitchens, refectory and library.
Reminding the people of the diocese that he will shortly be giving interviews to select candidates for the Colleges. Bishop Cowderoy points out that the diocese has 87 students at Wonersh, 83 at Mark Cross, 13 students and three studentpriests in Rome, four studentpriests at other universities and 44 students in Irish and other colleges. But, he adds, "the annual deficit on the Fund for
Ecclesiastical Education is much too great . . . the diocese has to find considerable sums of money, even to implement the ordinary fees to which few can entirely contribute."
