Work halts on Belloc memorial
WORK on a memorial in West Grinstead to Hilaire Belloc,
who died in 1953, will not, after all, begin this autumn. An appeal run by Fr. Herbert Fincham, Parish 'Priest of the Church of Our Lady of Consolation and St. 'Francis of which Hilaire Belloc was a parishioner, has raised £2,500 in the last year, but costs have soared to nearly £5,000.
When sufficient money has been raised, an inscription will be placed on the church tower, which is to be completed as the memorial. Belloc's grave will be only five yards away. to the East.
Fr. Fincham told mc that most of the money so far subscribed has come from Ireland. America, Africa. and Australia. He is wondering when comparable contributions from Helloes own country are going to start coming in. Donations can be sent to him at Priest's House, West Grinstead, Horsham, Sussex.
