POLISH REDS TURN HEAT ON CHURCH

TH E Polish Communist Government has demanded
that the Hierarchy settle the problem of permanent clergy in the German "recovered territories" (East German territories annexed by Poland) without waiting for the Vatican to move in this matter.
A Polish Government news agency report received in Frankfurt disclosed that the Polish Office for Religious Affairs has sent
a sharp note to Bishop Choro manski, secretary of the Hierarchy.
The Government recalled in this note that one clause of the ChurchState agreement signed six months ago called for settlement of the " recovered territories" question.
But it added, there had been no sign of the Church moving on the question and the provisional appointments of clergy had continued unchanged.
The Vatican has never recognised that the former German territories had become Polish and has continued to treat them as part of the former German dioceses.
The note to the Polish Hierarchy said : The Church attitude is flagrantly against Poland's state and national interests and plays into the hands of anti-Polish elements and all forces of aggression and warmongering.
'Since nothing can stand in the way of full legal and political stabilisation in the Western territories, the Polish Government does not intend to tolerate such a state of affairs any longer in the territory of the Polish State.
',It calls upon the Polish Hierarchy to solve the present provisional state of affairs regarding Church appointments in the Western territories."
