POLISH RELIEF FUND SET UP Apostolic Delegate May Serve On Committee

The Polish Ambassador has announced that Archbishop Godfrey, the Apostolic Delegate, is seeking the permission of the Holy See for him to serve on the executive committee of the Polish Relief Fund.
The first appeal for the Fund was launched last Thursday at a meeting held at the Polish Embassy and addressed by the Polish Ambassador, Count Edward Raczynski, who described the scope of relief needed.
He said: " Relief work must at present be directed, in the first instance, towards aiding the numerous colonies of refugees in various countries. Of these countries Rumania, Hungary, and Lithuania are in closest proximity to Poland, and work there is of imperative urgency; but it is estimated that there will also be a particularly large colony of refugees in France.
" All this calls for relief action on a grand scale, and eventually relief work in Poland must be undertaken somewhat on the lines of the relief work carried out in Belgium.
" By far the greatest tragedy is the plight of the population of Poland itself. As soon as it is feasible we ought to organise, first of all, medical help and supplies of food for the people of Poland."
"PROFOUND SYMPATHY"
Dr. Mathew, Bishop Auxiliary of Westminster, who, with Professor Tancred Borenius, Mr Hugh Dalton, M.P., and Mr Elsley Zeitlyn, commended the appeal, spoke of his " great happiness " at being able " to testify his profound sympathy for Poland at this tragic hour."
So far, about £10,000 has been raised from private sources for alleviating the suffering of the Poles. The fund, which is co-ordinating the various channels for dispensing Polish relief, is, according to Lord Moyne, getting in touch with the thousands of Poles who have escaped from their own country into the lands of surrounding neutrals.
Subscriptions to the fund will be gratefully acknowledged, and may he earmarked for any special purposes that appeal to individual preferences. Cheques may be made out to the " Polish Relief Fund " and sent to the Midland Bank, 159, Great Portland Street, London, W.1.
