Archbishop Cardinale was delivering the Leconfield Lecture at Westminster School Hall last Thursday, at the invitation of the British-ltalian Society. Dr. Moorman, the Bishop of Ripon, who was an Anglican observer at the Council, presided. An overflow crowd filled the hall.
"One of the finest fruits" of the Vatican Council, said Archbishop Cardinale, was the ecumenical movement in the Catholic Church. It held promise for the future of all Christians.
In the discussions between Churches, he went on, "the basic differences have not been whittled down, but the bases for a fraternal dialogue have been laid".
Later in his speechthe Archbishop described Pope Paul as a man who "is charging ahead with astonishing vigour to carve out his own image of the Papacy, harmoniously combining the qualities of three great Pontiffs-Pius XI's strong will, Pius XII's knowledge and wisdom, John XXIII's limitless goodness".
This week Archbishop Cardinale has been paying an official visit to the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. He called on the Lord Mayor of Newcastle and opened St. Bede's Grammar • Technical School at Lanchester on Wednesday and visited a coal mine on Thursday.
After meeting priests and nuns of the diocese over the weekend, he will spend Whitsun at Ushaw Seminary in Durham.
