Homegrown 'Gloria' at Westminster

FOR the first time in its history, the Choir of Westminster Cathedral is to perform a work composed by one of its own Choristers.
The work, a Gloria, was written last year by James Martin, pictured here, and won first prize in the 1986 Choir Schools' Composers' Competition.
With the blessing of Cardinal Basil Hume, OSB, David Hill, the Master of Music in the Cathedral, chose the 5.30 pm Mass on the Feast of the Annunciation, Wednesday March 25th, for the Choir to sing the work.
By a happy coincidence, it was the eleventh anniversary of the Cardinal's installation as Archbishop of Westminster and he was the Celebrant.
James wrote his Glorialast year, when he was thirteen and still a pupil at the Cathedral' Choir School and a Chorister in the Choir. He won a Colet Academic Scholarship and a Music Scholarship and therefore a free place at St Paul's School in west London, where he is now a pupil.
