Glemp is hopeful

POLAND'S Cardinal Jozef Glemp of Gniezno and Warsaw said last week that negotiations to establish diplomatic relations between Poland and the Vatican "are going well."
He spoke to the press at Rome's Leonardo Da Vinci Airport after arriving to brief Pope John Paul on his talks with Polish Premier Wojciech Jaruzelski.
"I cannot say when it will be possible to normalise diplomatic relations, but I can say that negotiations are going well," said Cardinal Glemp.
Last summer, Polish authorities began to speak about resuming diplomatic ties with the Vatican. On January 14, during his meeting with the Vatican diplomatic corps, the Pope alluded to these relations.
"The Holy See would be happy to see here other ambassadors coming especially from nations that in this connection have a centuriesold tradition and above all those nations that can be considered Catholic, the Pope said.
If diplomatic relations were established, Poland would become the first Warsaw Pact country to have diplomatic ties with the Vatican. Currently, Yugoslavia is the only Eastern European country with an ambassador to the Holy See.
Cardinal Gimp said he had spoken with Jaruzelski about the release of Polish political prisoners and about the use of a multi-million pound fund to modernise Polish agriculture.
