TO THOSE writing in defence of Mosley's Fascism, Cardinal Hinsley

in the 1930s. said "Any Catholic calling himself a Fascist was not acting in the best interests of the Catholic Church."
Pope Pius XI condemned Fascism in ha encyclical Non abhiamo bisogno The Apostolate of the Laity. in 1931. and when Catholics tried to sell this on the streets of Rome, they were beaten up by Mussolini's fascists forcibly dosed with castor oil.
Mosley was a more intelligent man than Mussolini. but the tragedy is that Mosley who began in the Labour Party, and who in his early days condemned the Black and Tans and the massacre at Amritsar, according to Fr Sewell. should have been taken in by Mussolini.
Lipson in his History of Europe says: "Pope Pius XI condemned the Fascist Government for 'entirely monopolising the youth of the country from earliest childhood to maturity. and all for the exclusive advantage of a party and of a regime. on the basis of an ideology which
often resolves itself into a veritable pagan State-worship.'" Maybe Mosley was sincere, but the reality is that sincerity is not enough. there Must also be an informed conscience — perhaps Ian Paisley is also sincere — but in the words of T. S. Eliot "Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds."
I feel all this underlines the need as pointed out (in ■,:our same issue) by Canon Winsborough, and the Principal of Plater College, Mr D G. Chiles. for more Catholic adult education, and for more publicity for ' Plater College. which was pioneered by Fr O'Hea. Si. who was on the Gestapo's list for arrest. The social teaching of the Church is not an optional extra. Pope John XXIII says that "It is an integral part of Catholic teaching. and should be taught in all Catholic colleges and schools."
