One woman sold her engagement ring and sent the £8 which it raised for Fr. McGill's schools.
These are Lenten alms indeed!
A reader sending "a small offering" described it as "my first before I am received into the Church on Monday by the Grace of God."
"THE CATHOLIC HERALD." says another. "has made me ashamed of my stinginess and excuses for not giving
alms."
"A Mother of Four Small Boys" says "I deeply admire the courage of the parents of those brave children and will pay for them."
A widow sent "a little contribution for Fr. McGill and my intention along with it for the conversion of two of my family who are in the ranks of Christ's enemies (the Communist Party)."
A member of the war-time Sword of the Spirit cells, giving £5, says he met Fr. McGill and Mrs. Mather (who sent us the original appeal) when he was at an R.A.F. station in Nairobi. "and I know what fine people they are : Fr. McGill often came to talk to us."
Two organisations have this week sent donations : The St. Paul's Missionary Crusade in a seminary at Floriana, Malta, and the Redhill branch of the Catholic Action Cells Movement.
Fr. McGill, an Irish Holy Ghost Father, who lives and works under the constant threat of murder in the heart of Kenya's Mau Mau country, was recently voted ownership of 10 schools which were formerly breeding grounds of Mau Mau terrorism.
He plans to use them as powerful instruments for the conversion of the Kikuyu, but, because of Mau Mau terrorism, attendance has temporarily dropped to a point where the Government threaten to withdraw financial assistance.
Unless sufficieht funds are sent him soon he will he unable to maintain the schools until the present "emergency" is over—and his moment of opportunity comes.
