By DONAL MUSGRAVE THE body of Archbishop O'Hara, Britain's Apostolic Delegate who died last week, was flown back to Philadelphia for burial on Saturday On Tuesday, the day on which the body lay in state in Philadelphia Cathedral, Cardinal Cicognani, Papal Secretary of State, offered a special Requiem in the Vatican Parish Church of St. Anne.
On Wednesday Archbishop Vagnozzi, Apostolic Delegate in the U.S., sang Solemn Pontifical Requiem Mass, after which the burial took place in the crypt.
Bishop Holland, Coadjutor of Portsmouth, represented the Hier archy of England and Wales, and the Apostolic Delegation in London was represented by Fr. J. Jones, C.SS.R.
Last Friday morning, Archbishop Grimshaw of Birmingham, senior member of the English and Welsh Hierarchy, celebrated Pontifical Requiem Mass in Westminster Cathedral in the presence of Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay. who presided.
Archbishop Grimshaw was assisted by Mgr. B. Torpigliani. Counsellor at the Delegation. Fr. J. L. Carson, who had been private secretary to the Delegate, and Fr. J. Jones, C.SS.R. The absolutions were given by Cardinal Gracias, by Archbishop Gray of St. Andrews and Edinburgh, by Bishop Craven, Vicar Capitutar, Bishop Cashman and Bishop Holland. Among the large number who attended the Requiem were 7 Archhishim Heenan of Liverpool. Archbishop Murphy of Cardiff. Archbishop King, Bishop of Portsmouth; the Bishops of Southwark, Hcxham and Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham, Northampton, Menev ia, Clifton and Brentwood. Bishop Grant, Auxiliary of Northampton. Bishop Holland, Coadjutor of Portsmouth; Bishop Hornyak. Exarch for the Ukrainians; exiled Bishop Boisguerin of Sui Fa; Bishop Healy of Gibraltar. Bishop Dunne, Auxiliary of Dublin; two Mill Hill Bishops; Bishop Galvin of Miri, Borneo, and Bishop De Wit from the Philippines; the Abbots of Downside and of Ealing.
DIPLOMATS
Many members of the diplomatic corps attended including Lord Perth; Mr. F. Aiken, minister for External Affairs in Ireland. representing the Irish Government. and the Irish Ambassador. Mr. Cornelius Cremin, representing the President. Mr. De Valera.
The Mayor and Mayoress of the City of Westminster; Ald. P. Corhishley, representing the Mayor of Wimbledon: Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, and Mr. G. Constantinescu, who represented ex-King Michael of Roumania.
Bishop Cowderoy of Southwark, in a panegyric, said that Archbishop O'Hara had been called to fulfil positions of delicate and grave moment in the diplomatic service of the Holy See. He brought to the task natural tact and discretion and the pastoral zeal of the good shepherd. Bishop Cowderoy said that a superficial estimate of the breakdown of Archbishop O'llara's Nunciature to Roumania and his expulsion would account it a diplomatic failure, which, in a sense, it was. The blow, he said. was a bitter one for the Nuncio himself,
INTREPID
"His actions were constantly misrepresented, his motives impugned, his freedom of movement hampered, his faithful servants suspected and reviled and one of them arrested on a charge of high treason."
But when he was expelled. Bishop Cowderoy continued, "he left behind him pastors to care for the scattered flocks in countries stricken by persecution and repression; bishops he had consecrated often in secrecy and at great risk. How many faithful Christians must there not be in those parts. clinging to their faith in God and in God's truth who owe so much of their joy in Christ in the midst of their distress in this world to the brave. intrepid man who brought them strength and courage in their hour of agony?".
Pending the appointment of a new delegate, the work of the Delegation is being carried out under Mgr. Torpigliani, who has been appointed charge d'affaires.
