SHELTER'S BIRTHDAY AIM TO RAISE THIRD MILLION

BY A STAFF REPORTER
SHELTER, the national campaign for the homeless, celebrated its third birthday buy announcing a campaign to raise fl million for its work. If successful, this will represent its third fl million for housing aid by January 31. 1971.
During the last three years Shelter has raised more than £1,750,000 and confidently expects to reach its second Llm. by the end of its campaign on• January 31 next. It is now helping to rehouse families at the rate of three a day.
The Catholic Housing Aid Society was one of the bodies that helped to set up Shelter. While retaining its own identity, it continues to work in close harmony with Shelter which acts largely as a clearing-house and a fund raiser.
The present campaign, which is at least £500,000 ahead of its target, has helped 2.330 families to get better living conditions, and through voluntary housing associations has homes in the pipeline for an estimated 2,405 families. With the completion of the housing programme it is estimated that 4,735 families will have been re-housed. In its birthday message to supporters Shelter said it must always keep itself in perspective, and appreciate the importance of not only rescuing a minority of families but campaigning for the majority that it can't help.
It plans to allocate the third £1 million as follows: Sixty per cent will he used for rescue operations through housing associations; 71 per cent for education, particularly among young people; 6 per cent for housing aid and advice; 2 per cent for the Shelter Neighbourhood Action Project in Liverpool, and 7 per cent for emergencies.
The campaign estimates that it will spend 17+ per cent on administrative and fund-raising expenses.
The Liverpool scheme (S.N.A.P.) is already under way. It comprises a 650house neighbourhood which is to be rehabilitated by Shelter r collaborating with the local authority, housing and community associations. Over the weekend participants elected their local representatives to help run the scheme.
The other scheme upon which Shelter is placing its major emphasis is the Shelter (Family) Housing Aid Centre in London, which will offer an all-London service in housing aid and advice—eventually, it is hoped, developing localised housing aid and advice bureaux.
Students' volley ball target
STUDENTS of De La Salle College, Sheffield, are hoping to establish a volley ball record and hope at the same time to raise money for charity. On January 5 teams from the college and girls from Notre Dame High School and Doncaster Convent Collegiate plan to start the 60-hour sponsored marathon. They hope it will earn them a place in the "Guinness Book of Records".
