Loyal anger from student `child'!
"CANTAR cheerio row" (Catholic Herald, August 12) — What a (sadly) typical example of donnish bitchiness Professor Tim Smiley presents:
I refer specifically to the article, quoting Prof Smiley's "tribute" to Fr Christopher Jenkins, the Cambridge University chaplain he recently helped to oust: "I've always felt his heart lies in looking after schoolchildren."
This comes after Prof Smiley's other "compliment" to Fr Jenkins, that his "great virtue was his candour".
As one of the many privileged to have been instructed by Fr Jenkins, I felt a surge of loyal anger. Smiley is clearly implying that Fr Jenkins is too unsophisticated to "relate" to the undergraduates of today. A year ago, I was among their number and he certainly "related" to me.
