OSTERLEY'S SECOND PERIOD The Work Centralized
Father George Gallagher, S.J., (ViceProvincial), on the 18th inst., blessed and opened the St. Tarcisius's school-house, and the new study-hall, at Osterley, Middlesex.
In the interests of efficiency it has been found necessary to centralise the Campion House establishment in one place. Hitherto the students had their chapel, refectory, and dormitories at that House, but classes and studies had to take place in another House, St. Tarcisius's, distant some ten minutes' walk.
Shortly before he died, Fr. Edmund Lester, S.J., with considerable foresight, acquired a property adjoining Campion House. This house has now been efficiently equipped as a set of classrooms, common rooms and library, and has been re-named St. Tarcisius's.
The old St. Tarcisius's has been sold, and with the proceeds a new study-hall has been built in the garden of Campion House, designed by Mr. L. H. Shattock, F.R.I.B.A. It is a graceful building, of rusticated mottled brick with artificial stone dressings, and harmonises well with the general lay-out of the garden.
In his address to the sixty-four students now at Osterley, Fr. Gallagher urged them to live up to the tradition created by the eminent founder of Osterley. By making good use of the chapel and the study-hall they would derive inspiration for their ideal. and lay solid foundations for that higlz ,standard of education which was essential to the priest of to-day.
Osterley's Seven Hundred
Of the young men whom Fr. Lester helped, already 288 have reached ordination, and about four hundred are in various stages of preparation for ordination in the secular and regular clergy.
A month before he died, Fr. Lester wrote: " The finishing touches are being put on Osterley's first period. The future we leave in the hands of God. It will continue after we have all passed away and new students and new godmothers will carry the work on."
It is hoped that the biography of Fr. Lester will be ready for publication before Christmas.
