Tomas 0 Fiaich, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland was on Monday elected President of the Irish Bishops' Conference at their autumn meeting in Maynooth. The choice was unanimous. Since the death of Cardinal Conway in April, Archbishop Ryan of Dublin has been acting President of the conference.
The office of President is not automatically tied to the Primacy, and Archbishop 0 Fiaich's first period of office will be for two years, after which he will have to go for election again for a five-year period.
