Rhodesians get black archbishop

White-dominated Rhodesia got its first black native head of a diocese when Pope Paul VI named Bishop Patrick Chakaipa Archbishop of Salisbury.
Archbishop Chakaipa, auxiliary of Salisbury since 1973, succeeds English-born Jesuit Archbishop Francis Markall, 71, who resigned for reasons of health.
The Ordinaries or heads -of Rhodesia's other four dioceses and one apostolic prefecture are all white and all members of religious orders.
Rhodesia is one of the last strongholds of apartheid, or strict racial segregation, in Africa. Many observers have
been predicting a full-scale revolution soon if the white minority government of -Premier Ian Smith does not loosenits control over the 95per cent majority of blacks there.
Archbishop Chakaipa, 43, was trained In the regional seminary at Salisbury. Ordained in 1965, he worked in various pastoral assignments until 1973, when he was ordained bishop and appointed auxiliary to Archbishop Markel!.
The new archbishop is a member of the Shona tribe and received his early education in their native language.
