SOUTHWARK SPLIT
Catholic Herald Reporter WO major ecclesiastical changes were announced in Britain this week. They are designed to meet the problems posed by the large-scale population increase which is foreshadowed in the south-east area of England.
The changes, officially gazetted in L'Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, on Tuesday, are: 1. The diocese of Southwark, one of the largest in the country, is to be split. Part of it will be erected into an Archdiocese, a Metropolitan See, under Bishop aiwderoy, who will become an Archbishop.
2. A new diocese, Arundel and Brighton, is to be made out of the southern part of the old diocese of Southwark. It will embrace the county of Sussex and that part of Surrey not included in the new area of the Greater London Council. (Map: Page 12.),
