TWENTY-FIVE YEARS IN THE FAITH Prinknash Keeps a Happy Anniversary
On Tuesday, the feast of St. Peter's Chair at Antioch, the monks of Prinknash Abbey kept the silver jubilee of the reception of the community into the Catholic Church. To the great disappointment of the monks the Archbishop of Cardiff, who is recuperating after his recent illness, was unable to be present and to sing Pontifical High Mass in thanksgiving for the grace of conversion, as he had intended. It was the Archbishop who, as Bishop of Menevia, received into the Church the Caldey community of Anglican Benedictines on St. Aelred's Day, March 5, 1913, and for several years past His Grace has spent the feast with the community.
The silver jubilee was anticipated in order to be celebrated outside Lent; February 22 itself being the anniversary of the day on which telegrams were sent to Dr. Mostyn and to Dom Bede Camm, 0.S.B., informing them of the wish of the community to submit to the Holy See.
The High Mass was sung by Dom Wilfrid Upson, with Fr. Norbert Cowin as deacon, and Fr. Bernard Brown as subdeacon. Fr. Joseph Woodford was M.C. and Dom Leo Packer was one of the cantors. Fr. Dunstan Whitsed, Mr. Peter Anson, and Mr. Paul Davis were also present. All the foregoing were members of the community at the time of the conversion.
After Vespers a solemn 7'e Dem was sung. Among other congratulations, telegrams and letters were received from the Abbot-Primate and from Abbot Ferretti, the Abbot-Procurator of the Congregation. The community sent a telegram of filial homage and devotion to the Holy Father.
A mesage was received from the Cardinal Secretary of State conveying the Holy Father's blessing. A message of felicitation was also received from the Archbishop of Cardiff.
